From Lawrence Brett. Artefact No 1: Brown spots

Here are some pics of the brown spot artefact which I have identified as being due to insufficient draining of slides after cutting, and before placing in oven. The top two are typical of what I've been seeing in smooth muscle where the spots have ill-defined edges. The bottom two are a particularly bad case, but notice that in stratified squamous epithelium the spots have clearly defined edges. They also contain non-specific nuclear staining. Looks as though DAB is getting trapped under the section.
